FAQs

What Does My Teen Need for Their OT Session?

Getting set up is simple. Here’s what you’ll need to help your teen feel ready and comfortable:

  • A quiet, private space where your teen feels safe and can talk openly

  • A device with a camera and microphone (like a laptop, tablet or phone)

  • A stable internet connection so the session runs smoothly

  • Any comfort items your teen might like nearby – a toy, drink, or something familiar

  • Headphones (optional, but great for privacy or focus)

If it’s your teen’s first session, we recommend sitting nearby in case they need help getting started. After that, we’ll guide you every step of the way.

A Telehealth OT for teens is a qualified Occupational Therapist who works with adolescents online through secure video sessions. They support teenagers to build independence, improve school participation, manage emotions, and develop skills for everyday life.

Telehealth OT can support teenagers with:

  • Building routines and organisation skills

  • Improving emotional regulation and stress management

  • Enhancing handwriting and study skills

  • Supporting independence in self-care and daily living tasks

  • Developing social skills and confidence

  • Preparing for life transitions, such as high school or moving into adulthood

Yes. Research shows Telehealth OT is effective for adolescents across a wide range of needs. Many teens prefer online sessions as they feel comfortable at home and familiar with technology. Telehealth also allows parents to be involved and ensures strategies are easily integrated into daily routines.

Telehealth Occupational Therapists can support with:

  • ADHD, autism, and learning difficulties

  • Sensory processing challenges

  • Anxiety and emotional regulation issues

  • School avoidance and participation difficulties

  • Low motivation, confidence, or self-esteem

  • Transition planning for further study, work, or independent living

Yes – research shows that telehealth OT is just as effective as in-person sessions for most children, teens, and adults.

Our Occupational therapist are trained specifically in delivering care online, using creative and engaging techniques to build strong connections with kids and teens through a screen. Many families even find it more convenient and less stressful, no travel, no waiting rooms, and your teen can talk from the comfort of home.

If at any point it isn’t working for your teen, we’ll work with you to adjust the approach. Our goal is to make therapy feel safe, supportive, and effective, no matter the setting.

Parents may be invited to the start or end of sessions to discuss goals and strategies. While the focus is on supporting the teenager’s independence, parent involvement helps ensure consistency and success outside of therapy.

  • A computer, tablet, or smartphone with internet access

  • A private space for the session

  • Headphones for focus and privacy (recommended)

  • Any therapy resources provided by the OT (e.g., pens, fidgets, sensory tools)

Yes. Telehealth OT can be funded under the NDIS if it aligns with your teen’s goals. Medicare rebates may be available with a GP Chronic Disease Management plan, and some private health policies also cover Occupational Therapy.

You may want to consider OT if your teen:

  • Struggles with organisation, planning, or completing schoolwork

  • Avoids daily living tasks like cooking, cleaning, or self-care

  • Has difficulty managing emotions or sensory experiences

  • Shows signs of school refusal or social withdrawal

  • Needs support to transition towards adulthood and independence

Finding the right psychologist is so important, especially for a teenager. If something doesn’t feel quite right, we absolutely want to hear about it.

Just let us know, and we’ll happily rematch your child with a different psychologist who might be a better fit for their personality, needs, or communication style. There’s no awkwardness or pressure, we’re here to make sure your teen feels safe, supported, and truly heard.

Your child’s comfort and progress are our top priorities.

Yes, absolutely.

Your child’s privacy is incredibly important to us. All telehealth sessions are conducted through secure, encrypted platforms, and any personal information shared is kept strictly confidential.

Our psychologists follow professional and legal guidelines to protect your family’s privacy. The only time information would be shared is if there are serious safety concerns, and even then, we’ll always aim to involve you where appropriate.

You can feel confident knowing your child’s sessions are safe, private, and handled with care.

The first appointment is all about building trust and getting to know your child. The psychologist will gently explore what brought your family to therapy, how your child communicates best, and what day-to-day life looks like for them. For younger children or those who need more support, parents may be more involved in this session.

Yes. After the session, we’ll provide a brief summary, share our recommendations moving forward, and give you the option to book follow-up sessions straight away. We’ll also check in to see how the session felt for you and your child.
